How to Reconfigure Windows XP to Download Faster

Windows XP includes an integrated firewall that helps to protect your computer from unauthorized access. In addition to preventing access from outside users, the Windows XP firewall also prevents programs you have installed on your computer from contacting outside servers without your explicit permission. This protective measure can slow down the download speeds from Internet servers, however. The Windows XP firewall can be configured to allow software on your computer to download files through certain ports, which can be manually opened to increase your download speed.

Instructions

·        Find the port the application you want to speed up uses. This information is usually found in your program's manual or in the help guide. For instance, Internet Explorer connects through port 80.
·        Click on the Windows XP start menu and access "My Network Places."

·        Click on the "View Network Connections" link under "Network Tasks."
·        Right-click the method you use to connect to the Internet (likely either Ethernet if you use a wire to connect your computer to a router or modem, or wireless if you are connected via Wi-Fi). Click the "Properties" option.
·        Click on "Settings" under the Advanced tab and click the "Add" button to add a new open port to the firewall.
·        Type a description for the port you are opening in the Description box. For instance, you can describe the port after the application you are intending to speed up.
·        Type "127.0.0.1" in the "Name or IP address of the computer hosting this service on your network" box. The 127.0.0.1 IP address refers to your own system.
·        Enter the port number associated with the application in both the "External Port" and "Internal Port" boxes. Click "OK."
·        Click on the "Exceptions" tab and then on the "Add Program" button.
·        Select the application you wish to speed up from the list of applications available. All applications you have installed on your system will appear in this list. Click "OK" to add the application to the Windows XP firewall white list (which means that connections to and from the program will not be blocked by the firewall).
·        Reboot your computer. The changes you have made will not take effect until your computer restarts.
